How to be a good tutor in English?

English is the universal language of communication today and it is the bridge between people who speak different mother tongues with different nationalities. In this day and age, it is important to be bilingual because one needs are able to express his or her thoughts and opinions with clarity; otherwise, it will be looked upon with ambiguity or brushed aside and labeled as ‘superficial explanation’. Depth and quality of content are important in what we say and write, and this is the way we can be convincing.

Mastering the English language is not an easy job, but it’s also not impossible. The challenging nature of the language causes students to feel stressed and helpless when they are unable to see an improvement in their results though they have practiced writing many essays and worked on comprehension passages. Let's see how to be a good tutor in English?

SO, HOW CAN ENGLISH TUTORS SHARPEN THEIR SKILLS TO HELP STUDENTS EXCEL IN THE SUBJECT?

#1: ASSESSING THE STUDENT

Tutoring is not easy because it requires a tutor to get into a student’s headspace to understand how they process information. Students learn at different rates and hence many may feel lagged behind when they pick up on information much slower than their peers. It is essential to observe students’ grammatical sense, their vocabulary knowledge, their current writing skills and so on. That way tutors can then think about different teaching techniques and more targeted practice sessions to hone their students’ skills.

#2: ENCOURAGE READING

This is the first advice that any English tutor should give is that reading is the key to good writing. Students need to enjoy reading books, immerse themselves in the world of knowledge. Reading simple news articles written by journalists in CNN, BBC, RT is a good start. Good English tutors should also remind their students not take anything superficially; in other words, it’s important to check for cross-reference on the facts presented, and observe the way the writer has used the language to bring across his or her opinion effectively to readers.

#3: PATIENCE

As a tutor, you need to remind yourself that your student is trying his or her best and it takes time to produce good results. You should not molly-coddle your student and neither should you be too harsh on them. Find the right balance and acknowledge the fact that you understand good results do not sprout out of nowhere; it takes hard work and lots of patience.

WHAT ELSE IS NEEDED?

A great English tutor knows that the key to giving an eloquent speech or writing a good essay is a broad knowledge base and lots of practice. It requires a student to have self-discipline in order to consistently practice getting better at their weak areas of the language and that requires them to break mental barriers as well. Tutors need to remind themselves over and over again that students could feel vulnerable and inhibited to ask questions and hence it is essential to remind students to feel free to clarify doubts right there and then. It is the tutors’ responsibility to be the primary source of motivation and inspiration!
